PRINCIPAL RESIDENCY
I Am Currently The 2020-2021 Principal Resident at Washington Gifted & Talented Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh, NC.
I am excited and honored to serve as the Principal Resident at Washington GT Magnet Elementary School for the 2020-2021 School Year! This year I will have the privilege of working with Principal Bob Grant and Assistant Principal, Joycenette Ratley to make Washington an engaging environment to develop the gifts and talents of every student.
Washington Elementary School is a Gifted and Talented Magnet School located in downtown Raleigh. Washington was founded in 1923 as the first public African American Graded and High School in Raleigh. The school opened in the fall of 1924 and in the years since the first brick was laid, the building has served a diverse group of students as a high school, a combination middle and elementary school, a 6th grade center and currently an elementary gifted and talented magnet school. In 2003, Washington School received designation as a Local Historic Site by the City of Raleigh's Historic Preservation Association. Washington was added to the National Register of Historic Landmarks in 2005. The building's facade has remained unchanged, however the interior has undergone extensive remodeling. A new Kindergarten wing and Ready to Learn Center were completed in 1996. A Math and Science Courtyard, construction of a new cafeteria, and interior renovations were added in 2003. Since its inception in 1982, Washington Elementary has received numerous distinguished awards throughout the years including: North Carolina School of Excellence, the Governor's Entrepreneurial School Award, Magnet Schools of America School of Distinction and Excellence designation, and the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Award as best magnet school in America. Washington School continues to thrive as an educational institution with a rich history and a proud legacy.
Children are the primary focus of Washington's school community. In this safe, positive and child-centered atmosphere, students are free to learn, grow, and excel. Administrators, teachers, parents, and children work collaboratively to facilitate our innovative instructional program which challenges all children to reach their full potential. In addition to our core academics, Washington's magnet electives nurture our children's unique educational needs and interests. This exciting learning community prepares students to take an active and productive role in their futures.
Washington Gifted and Talented Elementary's educational mission is to find and nurture the gifts and talents of all students, to develop essential skills and prepare students to be life-long learners. At WashinGTon we are a family that learns and grows together everyday. In our family, students AND staff discover and showcase their gifts and talents in the classroom and in multiple elective choices. You don't just see great things happening at Washington you feel it!
